Closer to Atlanta than Miami in proximity and spirit, Tallahassee maintains that southern "Other Florida" attitude, reflected in rolling green topography, leisurely lifestyle, and tasty comfort-oriented cuisine. Recent times also have brought in touches of ethnic flair. Florida’s capital -- with more than 5,000 rooms in more than 50 hotels, motels, and inns -- serves up an excellent selection of tantalizing dishes, with many dining enclaves featuring live music and dancing evenings and weekends. Specialties range from homemade country sausage and melt-in-your-mouth steaks to wild game and succulent seafood, fresh from the Gulf. Beignets, blackberry grits, gooey cinnamon rolls and omelets stuffed with crab are specialties at Tallahassee's Another Broken Egg. The landmark Andrews Capital Grill & Bar draws crowds with its weekday lunch buffet and express line, and vegetarians flock to the Higher Taste. Reservations can be a must when the state legislature is in session.
